If I wasn’t already obsessed with in-home photos from my last session, then I DEFINITELY am now after this family photography session in Holyoke, Colorado!
Austin and I went to Sara & Logan’s home in Holyoke where we started taking pictures of the family inside their own home. I had never met their sweet baby before so I think she was on high alert and watching my every move! It was so sweet. Plus, Austin was there, and he is also a stranger to the little girl, and maybe she thought he was a weirdo.
With little ones, I have been really loving taking pictures inside their house because they’re already comfortable and familiar with the space! And it’s literally real life being in a living room and a kitchen. Yes, I do ask parents to read to their kids or play with them in particular ways but they do that any other day when I’m not there too!
We also went outside to take pictures around their awesome property—their shop/barn is an AMAZING backdrop and provided some nice shade from the high sun! And their DOG IS HILARIOUS! That girl ran around so much and was definitely living it up. It was intensely windy but I love a good hair in the wind shot ;). We also took lots of “looking at the camera photos” too because even in a lifestyle session you need those shots!
Living close to the mountains and being in a bunch of Colorado photographer groups, sometimes I feel the desire and pressure to photograph in the mountains and have these massive mountain and lake views in the background of my photos. But I’m finding that there is so much emotion—sometimes even more than if there’s a gigantic backdrop—to be captured in a local family session that’s not at 8,000 ft elevation (also it’s way easier to breathe, just saying). A family’s own space is super meaningful to them, and I feel like you get a sense of that comfort/hominess/intimacy/sentimentalism through photos in that setting. There’s a hashtag called #momentsovermountains on Instagram and that is so real. Also selfishly, the mountains are ridiculously!! crowded lately and I’m so happy to have open space to photograph in :). Give me all the sessions in uncrowded places! (Also to be clear, I’m not opposed to photographing in the mountains and wouldn’t pass it up! I just love lots of different settings.)
I hope you enjoy these photos of this incredible family!! I had the best time and can’t wait to see their little girl grow up.
